Skin hygiene is very important; you should wash, clean and dry your residual limb (stump) daily, when bathing or having a shower as part of your regular personal hygiene routine.
Stump socks and prosthetic liners should be cleaned and changed daily with a gentle fragrant-free anti-bacterial soap, and rinsed well. More often if you sweat heavily during warmer months. Always dry your socks and liners properly. Periodic cleaning to limit the buildup of bacteria that can cause rashes or unpleasant odors.
Each device will come with its own wear and care schedule. In some cases, it will include a break-in period. Your prosthetist/orthotist or will advise you on physician recommendations or requirements. If applicable, your product may have a specific wear schedule.
The skin around your stump will always be fragile and it needs to be looked after. Prevention is better than cure – so always report any skin-related changes to your doctor or prosthetist immediately.
Since you will be relying on the prosthesis to help you walk, it is important to know how to take care of it. Remember NEVER attempt to make any adjustments to your prosthesis. If something becomes loose, is working incorrectly, is making strange noises or is suddenly uncomfortable, stop using it and contact your Prosthetist IMMEDIATELY!
